“It was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples involve:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the billionaire proprietor.
