The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
